Orientation and Game Rules

Welcome to the TS Golf Group. You have made it past the first step, not pissing anyone off and getting an invite back. Now the work begins!

There are many games played in the group and we encourage participation in as many as you like, but you are free to choose. We definitely prefer money players.

To play all you have to do is signup for the Saturday or Sunday round (or both if you like) using this site. Click "Signup->Signup For A Round" on the menubar above (ask someone in the group for the login credentials). We usually play an extra round on public holidays such as 4th of July, Labor Day, New Years Day etc. so watch out for those signups appearing. Typically we have 4 tee-times for Saturday and 3 on Sunday, however, if they ever become completely full we usually make inquiries at the Pro Shop to see if they can squeeze in an extra foursome. If we get the 'OK' then we'll open up 4 more slots, so check back frequently if you wanted to signup but it was full. During signup you will be asked to select the games you want to participate in, see the section "The Games" below for details on each game.

We abide by the latest USGA rules of golf. These are available as an app on the app store if you want to familiarize yourself. If you are unfamiliar with all of them and get into a situation, please consult with your playing partners for a ruling. If you have a questionable situation during a round, make a note of it and consult with Tommy when the round is done. We are competitive, but want a level playing field.

Make sure to putt everything out. No gimmes. Please don't 'rake' your ball around the hole if you miss a short one. They all count. If you do not hole out you will be disqualified from any medal games, become ineligle for any PepEx Cup points and given an automatic triple for the quota game.

It is also suggested that you familiarize yourself with good golf etiquette, the biggest being pace of play. We generally play ready golf (even on the green), with the one exception being giving the tee box for birdies (or better). Everyone has varying thresholds in the group, so please try to respect the folks you are paired up with. You will play with everyone at some point, so pay attention and adapt.

✱ Watch others off the tee to help locate balls quickly
✱ Don’t step on putting lines
✱ Be quiet and still when others are playing their stroke
✱ Respect everyone’s varying ‘bubble size’ when hitting
✱ Help your partners find balls
✱ Be efficient and be ready to hit when it’s your turn
✱ Give grace and direction when someone’s gone off the path, as we’ve all irritated someone at some point in time

Rules Of Note

✱ Out-Of-Bounds (OB) is played per the USGA rules and is a stroke and distance penalty. If you believe you have gone OB then declare you are playing a provisional ball and hit again. Alternatively, and in the interests of time, a local rule is in effect where you can determine the point where your ball went OB and play from the fairway perpendicular to that point. Drop your ball a maximum of two club lengths into the fairway and add two shots to your score.

✱ Bunkers. As always, per the rules of golf, play it as it lies. However, if you find that your lie is clearly compromised by a previous player’s activity in the bunker e.g. footprints, shot divots etc. and the members of the group you are playing with agree that you should get relief, you may:
1. Pick up your ball, smooth over the spot and replace your ball at the same spot OR
2. Take one club lengths relief from the spot (no nearer the hole) and place your ball on the sand. Note: you must remain in the bunker when taking relief.

✱ Red/Yellow stakes. Read the Rules Of Golf on penalty areas to make sure you know your options and play accordingly and correctly.
✱ Preferred Lies. In sloppy conditions, "lift, clean & place" will be declared on the first tee before the first group tees off. You may pick up your ball, clean it and place it a maximum of 1 club length from its original position, no nearer the hole, through the green (this includes the rough, yes, we know that's not normal). You cannot place a ball that was not on a putting green onto a putting green.

The Games

Payment

Payments are made and received by Venmo only. Occasional exceptions can be made, but for guaranteed immediate payment, you should set up a Venmo ID. Payments should be made prior to the start of the round with confirmations of the games being entered. Generally, Saturday payments are made through Chris Coons (VenmoID: @Chris-Coons-2) and Sunday payments through Grant McFarlane (VenmoID: @Grant-McFarlane), unless one or the other is out that day. Winnings will be paid out once the round is over. There is no need to hang around the clubhouse for payment, but we welcome it. All results are published on this site.

Quota ($10)

This is a modified stableford game. To qualify for this game you must have played a minimum of 3 rounds with the group. Your average stableford score over those 3 rounds will determine your 'quota'. The winner of the quota game is determined by comparing the points you scored in your round against your quota. You don't have to meet or be over your quota to win, sometimes just being the best of the worst will do! Moving forward, and as you play more rounds, your quota will be recalculated after every round using your best 5 stableford points scores out of your last 10.

Modified Stableford points:

✱ Albatross: 12 pts
✱ Eagle: 8 pts
✱ Birdie: 4 pts
✱ Par: 2 pts
✱ Bogey: 1 pt
✱ Double Bogey: 0 pts
✱ Triple Bogey (or worse): -1 pts

If there are less than 10 players participating only 2 places pay. First place pays 70% of the pot, 2nd place pays 30%. If there are 10 or more players participating then 3 places pay. 1st place pays 60%, 2nd place pays 30% and third place pays 10%. Ties are possible in which case the prize monies are added together and divided equally e.g. if there is a two-way tie for first the 1st & 2nd place money is added together and divided equally.

Gross Skins ($5)

Lowest gross score per hole wins the skin. No handicaps. A skin will not be awarded if there is a tie (a push). A skins value is calculated by "gross skin pot" divided by "the number of gross skins awarded", to the nearest whole dollar. No roll-overs, no validation. Any left over dollars go to the hole-in-one pot.

Net Skins ($5)

Lowest net score per hole wins the skin. The net score is calculated by subtracting any strokes received (due to handicapping) from your gross score for the hole. You must have an active GHIN account to participate in this game. A skin will not be awarded if there is a net tie (a push). A skins value is calculated by "net skin pot" divided by "the number of net skins awarded", to the nearest whole dollar. No roll-overs, no validation. Any left over dollars go to the hole-in-one pot.

Gross Medal ($5)

Lowest gross score over 18 holes wins. No handicaps. You must complete every hole by putting out ('picking up' will get you DQ'd from this game). Ties are settled by a scorecard playoff using the USGA recommended method:

✱ Better last 9 holes. If still tied then ...
✱ Better last 6 holes. If still tied then ...
✱ Better last 3 holes. If still tied then ...
✱ Better 18th hole. If still tied then a tie is declared and the money is divided equally.

Net Medal ($5)

Lowest net score over 18 holes wins. You must have an active GHIN account to participate in this game. The net score is calculated by subtracting your Course Handicap (CH) from your total gross score. You must complete every hole by putting out ('picking up' will get you DQ'd from this game). Ties are settled by a scorecard playoff using the USGA recommended method:

✱ Better last 9 holes (minus one half of the player's course handicap). If still tied then ...
✱ Better last 6 holes (minus one third of the player's course handicap). If still tied then ...
✱ Better last 3 holes (minus one sixth of the player's course handicap). If still tied then ...
✱ Better 18th hole (minus one eighteenth of the player's course handicap). If still tied then a tie is declared and the money is divided equally.

PepEx Cup

The PepEx Cup is a USGA handicapped event that runs from February through October with the playoffs being held in November and is loosely based on the FedEx Cup in the PGA Tour. You must have an official USGA handicap to participate. Players will accumulate PepEx points throughout the season based on their net score for the round (ranked against all others playing on that day) and in November the playoffs will start for the top 30 ranked players. PepEx points will be awarded for every Saturday game, however, they will only be awarded for Sunday games that fall on the 1st & 3rd (and possibly 5th) Sundays of the month. The value of the points awarded is dependant on the number of players competing in that round:

# Of PlayersRate
0 - 70%
8 - 16100%
17 or more125%

In the playoffs each player must complete 4 rounds during the month of November. A playoff round must be played on either a Saturday or Sunday and there will be 8 opportunities in the month for players to submit a qualifying round (possibly even 9 or 10 depending on the year). A round will only count towards the playoffs if the player checks the appropriate box at signup. Players who do not complete 4 rounds by the last Sat/Sun of November will be disqualified. The cup will be awarded to the player with the lowest net score at the end of 4 rounds. In the event of a tie the 18th hole of course #1 will be played repeatedly, with handicaps in effect, until a winner is determined.

During the regular season points will be awarded as follows:

Hole-In-One

A one-time payment of $20 is required to participate and you can buy-in to this game at anytime. A player who gets a hole-in-one wins the entire pot. Once the pot is won, players must 'ante up' again. After every round, any left over dollars from the gross and net skins games are added to the hole-in-one pot. The pot is only awarded for a hole-in-one that was made during an officially sanctioned 'TS Golf Group' round i.e. The Saturday/Sunday game or a round played on a public holiday that has been officially sanctioned beforehand e.g. 4th July etc. Any ace made in a casual round played outside of these will not be awarded the pot.
